a)     INTRODUCTION TO BANK CARDS

GOALS:

  • Understand the relationship between the international associations and member banks.
  • Understand the meaning of terminology pertaining to bank cards.
  • Understand the various relationships involved in a card transaction.
  • Understand the transaction process.

Assessment Criteria:

  • The learner demonstrates an understanding of the relationships between the international associations and member banks.
  • The learner demonstrates an understanding of the definitions and terminology pertaining to bank cards.
  • [Range: BIN, Authorisation, Acquirer, Cardholder, Chargeback, CVV, CVC, CPP, Embossing, Expiry date, Hot Card, Issuer, Merchant, Magnetic Stripe, Floor limit, Hologram, POS].
  • The learner demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between:
  • (i)         the card issuer and cardholder,
  • (ii)        merchant acquirer and merchant and
  • (iii)       the merchant and cardholder 
  • The learner is able to explain the transaction process.

b)     CARD SECURITY FEATURES

GOALS:

  • Understand the difference between credit, debit and charge cards.
  • Identify and describe the security features of the different cards as prescribed by the various international associations.
  • Distinguish between a genuine and counterfeit credit and charge card.

Assessment Criteria:

  • The learner is able to identify and describe the difference between credit, debit and charge cards.
  • The learner is able to identify and describe the unique security features of Visa, Master, Diners and American Express cards.
  • The learner is able to distinguish between Visa, Master, Diners and American Express cards.
  • The learner is able to tell the difference between a genuine and counterfeit credit and charge card.

c)     TYPES OF FRAUD

GOALS:

  • Identify and understand the different types of fraud committed with bank cards.
  • Understand what is a counterfeit card.
  • Have a broad understanding of how card information can be compromised.

Assessment Criteria:

  • The learner is able to identify the 6 different types of fraud committed with bank cards.
  • The learner understands the meaning of the acronym MOTO.
  • The learner demonstrates an understanding of what constitutes a counterfeit card.
  • The learner is able to name and explain 3 different ways to counterfeit cards.
  • The learner demonstrates an understanding of laundering and factoring.
  • The learner demonstrates an understanding of how card information can be compromised.

d)     GUIDELINES FOR MERCHANT TO AVOID FRAUDULENT TRANSACTIONS

GOALS:

  • Know what steps to follow when dealing with a card transaction.
  • What a code 10 authorisation is.
  • Understand how to safely transact with credit cards in respect of e-commerce transactions.
  • Understand what security features should be on a legitimate identity document.
  • Distinguish between a legitimate and counterfeit identity document.
  • Identify suspicious behaviour of would-be fraudsters.

Assessment Criteria:

  • The learner is able to state the 6 steps to follow when dealing with a card transaction.
  • The learner is able to explain the term Code 10.
  • The learner is able to list 4 things that an e-commerce merchant should ensure when setting up their website.
  • The learner is able to list 6 things that an e-commerce merchant should know about the cardholder.
  • The learner should be able to explain when an e-commerce merchant should get authorisation for a local and foreign card.
  • The learner should demonstrate an understanding of what to look out for when transacting with credit cards for e-commerce transactions.
  • The learner should be able to list and explain 5 types of suspicious behaviours to look out for when dealing with bank cards.
  • The learner should list the security features on a legitimate identity document.

e)     THE IMPLICATIONS OF CARD FRAUD

GOALS:

  • Understand what a chargeback window is.
  • Know when a merchant's card acceptance facilities can be terminated due to excessive fraud.
  • Understand what a chargeback is.
  • Know how to prevent a chargeback.

Assessment Criteria:

  • The learner can explain what a chargeback window is.
  • The learner demonstrates knowledge of when a merchant's card acceptance facilities can be terminated.
  • The learner demonstrates an understanding of the term “chargeback”.
  • The learner is able to list 5 reasons how to prevent a chargeback.

f)       THE WAY FORWARD

GOALS:

  • Have an understanding of the latest technology.
  • Have a general idea of what the banks are doing to curtail bank card fraud.
  • Understand how the different initiatives will impact on the current credit card system.

Assessment Criteria:

  • The learner is able to state what is the latest technology in the card industry.
  • The learner is able to list 3 benefits of the chip card.
  • The learner demonstrates an understanding of what the banks are doing to prevent bank card fraud.
